ISC2 SSCP®Systems Security Certified Practitioner
ISC2 SSCP (Systems Security Certified Practitioner) is the hands-on practitioner cert positioned a notch above Security+ and well below CISSP. It covers operational security work across seven domains, with the heaviest weight on Network and Communications Security and Security Operations. Often described as 'CISSP-Lite,' but the focus is more technical and execution-oriented than CISSP's management lens. The cert was last refreshed in September 2024 and is appropriate for security administrators, SOC analysts, and network engineers who do real hands-on work but have not yet hit CISSP's five-year experience bar.

Who it’s for
Built for the people taking this exam.
SOC analysts, security administrators, network security engineers, and Security+ holders looking for a more technically rigorous practitioner credential without CISSP's 5-year experience requirement. Also a common pick for cleared federal contractors who need an ISC2 cred at IAT II.
Why it matters in 2026
The career signal.
SSCP is DoD 8140-approved at IAT Levels I and II and is on the CSSP Infrastructure Support approved list, which makes it directly bookable on federal cybersecurity contracts. It is significantly cheaper than CISSP ($249 vs $749) and earns the ISC2 branding that several Fortune 500 hiring filters specifically gate on. For Security+ holders who want a more technical second cert (rather than the management-leaning CISSP track) it is the natural next step, and it counts toward CISSP CPEs if you eventually go that route.
Sample question
What a ISC2 SSCP® question looks like.
In the DIKW hierarchy, which pair of outputs is associated with moments of sudden realization or breakthrough understanding?
Why: Breakthrough realizations produce insights that emerge from wisdom, placing them at the apex of the DIKW pyramid. The hierarchy moves upward from Data to Information to Knowledge to Wisdom, with Insights often treated as an extension of or companion to the Wisdom level. Movement between levels is driven by specific activities: processing and modeling move data to information, hypothesis generation moves information to knowledge, and the consolidation of established ideas moves knowledge to wisdom.
