CompTIA® Tech+Certified Tech Professionals
CompTIA Tech+ (FC0-U71) is the rebranded successor to IT Fundamentals+ (ITF+), launched July 16, 2024. It is the pre-A+ on-ramp covering IT concepts and terminology, infrastructure, applications and software, software development concepts, database fundamentals, and security. The rename reflects a real scope expansion toward database and dev concepts (not just hardware/OS basics), but the credential remains a beginner-level cert meant to confirm someone is ready to commit to an IT career. CompTIA explicitly positions Tech+ as the feeder credential into A+ and as a workforce-development on-ramp for high school and community college programs.

Who it’s for
Built for the people taking this exam.
Complete beginners exploring whether IT is the right career, high school and community college students, and career changers who want a low-stakes credential before committing to A+ or Security+.
Why it matters in 2026
The career signal.
Tech+ is the cheapest legitimate IT cert on the market and the only widely recognized one designed for pre-A+ skill levels. The lifetime validity removes the CEU treadmill that scares off career changers, and it gives non-IT resumes a defensible answer to 'do you have any IT background?' for help-desk, apprenticeship, and IT support applications. CompTIA also positions it as the formal feeder into A+, which makes it useful for community college and workforce-development programs that need a stackable credential path.
Sample question
What a CompTIA® Tech+ question looks like.
What is the decimal equivalent of the binary number 00000111?
Why: Binary is a base-2 numbering system that uses only the digits 0 and 1. Each position in a binary number corresponds to a power of 2. Starting from the rightmost position, the place values are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128. In 00000111, the three rightmost bits are set to 1, so the value equals 1 + 2 + 4 = 7 in decimal.
