NLN CNE®Certified Nurse Educator

The Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) credential is issued by the National League for Nursing (NLN) for academic nurse educators in pre-licensure and graduate nursing programs. The exam is built around the NLN's eight Core Competencies for Academic Nurse Educators — it tests teaching, curriculum, and scholarship practice, not clinical nursing knowledge. A separate CNEn (novice) and CNEcl (clinical-faculty) credential exist for adjacent roles.

What’s tested

Key topics on the NLN CNE® exam.

The Cert Climb question bank is mapped to every domain on the official NLN CNE® exam blueprint, so what you study is what the test asks.

Who it’s for

Built for the people taking this exam.

Faculty in BSN, ADN, and graduate nursing programs — lecture and lab/sim instructors with at least 2 years of academic teaching. CNE is the credential for full classroom faculty; clinical-only faculty typically pursue CNEcl, and faculty in their first year typically pursue CNEn.

Why it matters in 2026

The career signal.

AACN-accredited and CCNE/ACEN-reviewed nursing programs increasingly cite faculty CNE counts on their accreditation self-studies, and some state boards of nursing weight CNE during faculty-qualification review. With nursing-school faculty vacancies remaining the rate-limiter on US RN production (AACN reports thousands of qualified applicants turned away annually), CNE-credentialed educators are in active recruitment demand.
