AACN CCRN® (Neonatal)Critical-Care Registered Nurse (Neonatal)
The AACN CCRN (Neonatal) certifies RNs and APRNs who provide direct care to acutely or critically ill neonates, typically in a Level III or IV NICU. Same Synergy-Model exam architecture as the Adult and Pediatric CCRN credentials — 80% Clinical Judgment / 20% Professional Caring and Ethical Practice — but with content scoped to the neonatal population: prematurity, respiratory failure and surfactant management, congenital heart and abdominal anomalies, neonatal sepsis, hyperbilirubinemia, and family-centered developmental care. Issued by the AACN Certification Corporation; a smaller candidate pool than Adult CCRN means fewer prep resources but the same rigor.

Who it’s for
Built for the people taking this exam.
Level III/IV NICU RNs and neonatal APRNs who care for premature and critically ill newborns. The dedicated neonatal credential for nurses whose population is exclusively the NICU rather than mixed PICU/NICU floats.
Why it matters in 2026
The career signal.
Neonatal CCRN is the standard certification for NICU staffing tiers and is referenced in many Magnet and Level IV NICU staffing models. The candidate pool is small (~500/year) but the population specificity makes it the strongest signal NICU managers can put on a job posting after RN licensure.
